ScarWork is a gentle, hands-on therapy that reduces the tissue damage associated with scarring, it helps to reduce fibrosis (thickening), adhesions and contracture (tightening). This helps to reduce pain and restore sensation. It is also beneficial emotionally and can help you to process your feelings towards your scar.
ScarWork therapy can be used on any scar, no matter how small or large, old or new – caesarean, hysterectomy, joint replacement, burns, trauma, key-hole surgery. All can benefit from ScarWork therapy.
You may not feel that your scar is causing any issues, especially if it is old but the impact on your body can be substantial. For example, abdominal scarring can cause issues with posture leading to back pain and affect your breathing patterns leading to shoulder or neck pain. This is a testimonial from a patient I helped during her recovery from breast cancer surgery…
“I started coming to Gina for help with pain in my abdomen muscles following DIEP surgery. It had gotten so bad that I’d been struggling to work and simple things like leaning forwards was causing pain. During my first visit, Gina made me feel comfortable and it was really reassuring to know that she had dealt with other patients who had the same struggles – something my doctors and physio weren’t able to do!
The scar massage is very gentle and relaxing. During the session I didn’t notice a huge difference immediately, however when at work the next day I was in significantly less pain. I continued to come for scar massage sessions weekly, then monthly and noticed a huge improvement to my overall pain but also quality of life. Gina gave me tips for how to protect my body when working and what exercise might be helpful.
I would honestly say that having scar massage changed my life. Since my initial batch of sessions I return from time to time when I have had a regression in pain (usually because I have overdone it!) and Gina is always able to fit me in to have a top-up session.”
